A central base for fishing in North Wales

Fly fishing for trout, a salmon and grayling river and coarse lakes are all close by, and one of them is half a mile from the door.

Fishing in North Wales

This part of central North Wales is a genuine base for anglers, with game, coarse and river fishing all within a short drive. Staying near Corwen rather than committing to one water means you can fish a reservoir one day, the river the next and a coarse lake the day after, and most of it is within around half an hour.

The waters

Llyn Brenig, around fifteen minutes away in the Clocaenog Forest, is a fly-only trout fishery good enough to have hosted the World Fly Fishing Championships, with boat and bank fishing for rainbow and brown trout, and pike in winter.

The River Dee around Corwen and Llangollen is well known for salmon, sea trout, grayling and wild brown trout, with day permits through the Corwen and Llangollen angling clubs.

Alwen Reservoir, alongside Brenig, holds wild brown trout on a catch and release basis.

Bala and Llyn Tegid, around thirty minutes away, hold pike, perch and other coarse fish.

From the door

Llyn Derwen Fishery, two coarse lakes holding carp, tench, bream, perch, roach and rudd, shares the cottages’ postcode and is about half a mile away. Guests also receive a free permit to fish a mile of the Upper River Dee, with the number of days depending on the length of the stay.

A week on the water

Between the lakes and the river you can fish a different water most days of a week’s stay without driving far.
